Candidate Tips

Your resume is killing your chances. Here is why.

Most candidates optimize for the algorithm and forget there is a person on the other side of the screen.

Your resume is the first thing a recruiter sees. It is also the first reason most candidates get eliminated. There is a common belief that AI screens resumes and that you just need the right keywords to pass. That is partially true. Applicant tracking systems do scan for keywords. But in most cases, a human being makes the final call on whether your resume moves forward to the hiring manager or gets set aside. That human has 10 seconds. Maybe less.

The human factor most candidates ignore

Recruiters are not reading your resume. They are scanning it. They are looking for clarity, structure, and signals that tell them instantly whether you are worth a closer look. The AI gets you through the door. The human decides if you come in. Most candidates optimize entirely for the algorithm and forget there is a person on the other side of the screen. That person is busy, reviewing dozens of profiles, and making split-second judgments based on what they see in the first few lines.

What a resume in shambles signals

A disorganized resume does not just look bad. It communicates something specific to the recruiter reviewing it. It signals a lack of attention to detail. In finance and tech, two industries where precision matters, that signal is particularly damaging. A recruiter who works with portfolio managers, risk analysts, or software engineers is looking for candidates who are exact and methodical. Your resume is the first evidence of whether you are.

The gap between qualified and hireable

This is the part most candidates do not want to hear. You can be fully qualified for a role and still not get an interview. Not because your experience is wrong. But because your resume did not communicate that experience clearly enough in the time a recruiter had to review it. Qualification gets you in the database. Presentation gets you in the room. In a competitive market like tech and finance, the gap between a qualified candidate and a hireable one is often nothing more than how their resume is organized.
